Ms Vinaya Gangan, Prof. Bharati Bellare, Dr. N.D. Moulick, Dr. Geetha Krishnamoorthi, Dr.Maroli. L.T.M.G. Hospital, Mumbai.

This study is carried out in 2 phases – The first phase was  plot study with the objective of studying effect of exercising on a bicycle ergometer for 20 minutes, 3 times a week, for 3 weeks.  This exercise regimen was controlled by the cycling rate (30 revolutions per minute) and rate pressure product.  Ten patients suffering form NIDDM were studied.  Parameters studied at pr and post exercise programme were –

1)        Fasting glucose

2)        Post prandial glucose

3)        Rat of Perceived Exertion (RPE)

4)        BP, PR – was also monitored at every session.

The results of study indicated a significant fall in fasting and post-prandial glucose level and RPE.  Even very light exercises have shown a significant fall in fasting and post-prandial glucose levels without taxiing the cardiovascular system.

The objective of the next phase was to study whether moderate level of exercise will have higher beneficial effects in NIDDM.  This consists of exercise of 30 min duration (5 min of stretching and aerobic exercises, 20 min of treadmill walking with HR between 70-80% of HR max., 5 min of cool down with level walking).

Parameters recorded beside above parameters are- Physical Parameters-Height, Weight, Girth and Skin-fold measurements.  Biochemical parameters-Lipid profile, Giycosylated Hb, glucose levels, Vit-C,E, asntioxidants and insulin levels.  Two month of follow up is done with the frequency of exercise 3 times a week.  The results of the ongoing study in 15 patients will be presented in the conference.
