Sanjay Sirdeshpande, Dhanwantari Diabetes Centre, Barsi.

All the participants were tested for plasma glucose after overnight fasting.  They were given 75gm of glucose in water orally and plasma glucose was tested two hours after ingestion of glucose.

112 participants showed abnormal glucose tolerance. 47 had D.M., 54 had I.G.T., 11 had I.F.G.  Amongst diabetics 4 had below normal B.M.I., 25 had normal B.M.I. and 18 had above normal B.M.I.  Amongst I.G.T., 46 had above normal W/H ratio, 8 had less than normal W/H ratio. Amongst I.G.T., 4 had below normal B.M.I. 30 had normal B.M.I. and 20 had above normal B.M.I.  Amongst I.F.G. 8 had above normal W/H ratio, 3 had less than normal W/H ratio.  Amongst I.F.G. 1 had below normal B.M.I., 5 had normal B.M.I., 5 had above normal B.M.I.

CONCLUSIONS:

Incidence of abnormal glucose tolerance in high risk population is 24.6%.

Incidence of I.G.T. is higher than D.M.

W/H ratio is better index than B.M.I.

Incidence of lean D.M., is about 10%
